The highest paying bet is to predict which number the ball will land in. Since there are 33 numbers on the wheel, this is also the most risky type of bet. The bets with the least risk (and the lowest return) are the even chances: bets on whether the ball will land on red or black, or on an odd or even, high or low number.
Although the betting layout looks complicated, placing bets is quite simple. To bet on individual numbers the chip is placed directly on top of the number. For two adjacent numbers on the layout, placing a chip on the middle of the line that divides them makes the bet. A bet on red or black, high or low, even or odd is made by placing a chip in the corresponding box on the betting layout.
Casinos use both left- and right-hand tables, which adds to the confusion of placing bets. On a right-hand table the first column is the one furthest from the dealer, on a left-hand table it is closest to the dealer. Some basic bets are illustrated opposite. The colour in brackets refers to the appropriate chip on the diagram.
STRAIGHT UP (Green)
This is a bet on any one of the 38 numbers including 0 and 00. The chip should be placed directly on top of the desired number on the layout ensuring that it is not touching any of the surrounding lines. It wins only if that number is spun. Odds paid are 35 to 1.
SPLIT (Pink)
A bet on two adjacent numbers on the layout. The bet is placed on the centre of the line between the two numbers. It wins if either of the two numbers is spun. Odds paid are 17 to 1 (also written as 17/1).
STREET (Brown)
A bet on three adjacent numbers across the layout. It wins if any of the numbers is spun. Odds paid are 11/1.
CORNER (Orange)
A bet on four adjacent numbers on the layout. The chip is placed on the line where they meet. It wins if any of the four numbers is spun. Odds paid are 8 to 1.
FIRST FOUR (Red)
A bet on the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3. It is placed on the corner of the layout where 1 and 0 meet. It wins if any of the four numbers win. Odds of 3 to 1 are paid.
FIRST FIVE (Dark blue)
On a double-zero table, a bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. It is placed on the lines where 0, 00 and 2 meet. It wins if any of these numbers are spun. Odds paid are 6 to 1.
DOUBLE STREET (Purple)
A bet on six adjacent numbers across the layout. The chip is placed on the double line at the side of the layout at the cross section of the middle line of the six numbers. Odds paid are 5 to 1.
QUATRO (Not shown)
Some layouts incorporate bets on a quarter of the numbers. The first quarter is numbers 1-9 inclusive, the second 10-13, the third 19-27, and the fourth 2336. Bets are placed in the appropriate box. Odds paid are 3 to 1. Bets lose if 0 is spun.
COLUMN (Black and grey stripes)
A bet on a group of 12 numbers running in one of the three columns along the table. Bets are placed in the box at the base of the column. The bet wins if any number in the column is spun. Odds paid are 2 to 1. All bets on the column lose if 0 is spun.
DOZEN (Yellow)
A bet on a group of 12 consecutive numbers. There are three dozens: 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36 inclusive. Bets are placed in the appropriate box. The bet wins if any of the 12 numbers is spun. Odds paid are 2 to 1. All bets on the dozens lose if 0 is spun.
EVEN CHANCE BETS (Magenta and Blue)
Also called the outside bets, these are bets on a certain characteristic of the number spun, such as whether it is red or black, even or odd, high or low. Bets are placed in boxes marked with that characteristic and win if the appropriate characteristic is spun. Odds paid are evens. If 0 or 00 is spun, players lose half their stake.
