French and English Roulette

French roulette, the predecessor of the American version, is mostly played in European casinos and is dealt in French. Although the equipment and language used differs, it is in principle the same game as American roulette, although it is played more slowly.

French roulette is played on a table roughly twice the size of that used for American roulette. The betting layout differs, the numbers are arranged in a random order and there is only one zero. Each table has two dealers and a chef de table (inspector) who are seated around the wheel. The dealers move the chips around using a long stick, called a rake. Players bet by throwing their chips to roughly the correct place and the dealers then line them up using the rake.

Although the game is dealt in French, players familiar with American roulette can get by with just a few words of French.

Specialty Bets

Unlike American roulette, some of the bets placed on French roulette cover particular sections of the wheel.

TIERS DU CYLINDRE

Commonly called tiers. A six-chip bet consisting of splits covering numbers 5/3, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30, 33/36. This bet covers almost one-third of the wheel, from 33 to 27. If any number in that section is spun 17 chips are won and five chips are lost.

VOISINS DU ZERO

A nine-chip bet that covers the section of the wheel around zero. The bets placed are 0/2/3 (2 chips) street. Splits on 4/7, 12/15, 13/21, 19/22, 32/35 and a four- number bet 25/26/28/29 (2 chips). If 0, 2, 3, 25, 26, 23 or 29 are spun, 16 chips are won and 3 lost. If any other number is spun 17 chips are won and 8 are lost.

VOISINS

A bet on five numbers straight up that are adjacent to one another on the wheel. A bet on cinq et les voisins (five and the neighbours) is a bet on number 5 and the two numbers either side of it on the wheel (a straight up on 23, 10, 5, 24 and 16). The dealer places these bets. Simply give five chips and announce your bet.

LES ORPHELINS

Les Orphelins or The Orphans, covers the sections of the wheel that are not covered by the tiers and the voisins du zero. It is a five-chip bet on number 1 straight and the splits 6/9, 14/17, 17/20, 31/34. If 1 is spun, 35 chips are won and 3 chips lost. However, if number 17 wins then 34 chips are won and 3 chips are lost. If either 6, 9, 14, 20, 31 or 34 are spun, 17 chips are won and 4 chips are lost.

English Roulette

This is a hybrid of American and French roulette. To confuse matters, the English call it American roulette. It is mostly played in British and European casinos on American roulette tables using the French wheel (with one zero). The game is played in the same manner as American roulette but incorporates many elements of French roulette, including French terms for the bets and the speciality bets of voisins, tiers and orphelins.

Neighbour Oval

Some English roulette tables incorporate a neighbours oval. This is a diagram of the wheel printed on the layout in front of the dealer. It allows neighbour bets (voisins) to be placed quickly without the difficulty of placing the individual straight-up bets (en plein).

The dealer places the neighbours bets. Simply give the dealer five chips and announce your bet. For ‘five and the neighbours‘ the dealer will place the chips on the number 5 on the oval. The ball is spun and the dolly placed as usual. Before clearing the layout the dealer will point to the winning number on the oval and announce either ‘neighbours win’ or ‘neighbours lose’. If there is a winning neighbour bet, one of the chips is removed from the oval, placed on the winning number and paid out as a winning straight-up bet.
