A wide choice of bets can be played on craps, some of which are better value for the player than others. Before betting it is best to compare the difference in house advantage (the profit made by the casino) for each bet. The best-value bets are the pass/don’t pass and come/don’t come bets. These allow the player to make an additional bet called odds. By playing the odds bets, the house advantage is reduced to less than one per cent.
Pass (Win) Line
Pass (win) bets must be placed before the come out roll and cannot be removed or reduced after the point is established. A bet on the pass line wins if a natural (7 or 11) is thrown on the come out roll or if a point is made. It loses if craps (2, 3 or 12) is thrown on the come out roll or if the shooter fails to make a point. Winning bets are paid at evens. This is the most common bet played. Players simply place the chips on the line in front of where they are standing. The house advantage for bets on the pass line is 1.41 per cent.
Don’t Pass (Don’t Win) Line
This is the opposite of a bet on the pass (win) line and must also be placed before the come out roll. After a point is established it can be reduced or removed. The bet wins if craps is thrown on the come out roll or if the shooter fails to make a point. It loses if a natural is thrown on the come out roll or if a point is made.
Casinos bar one of the craps numbers (either 2 or 12) to give themselves a bigger house advantage.
A barred score is shown by an illustration of two dice in the don’t pass section of the layout. The score shown indicates the barred score. If two ones are shown then 2 is barred. If two sixes are shown then 12 is barred. A barred score is void (it neither wins nor loses) and this is called a push or a tie.
The house advantage for the don’t pass line depends on how many craps numbers are barred. If none are barred, the house advantage is 1.4 per cent, rising to as high as 4.38 per cent if more than one number is barred.
Come and don’t come
These bets are not very popular as many players do not understand them, but they allow players who join the game after the come out roll to bet. Although they are similar to bets on the pass and don’t pass lines, the difference is that they can be placed on any throw of the dice after the come out roll. When a player makes a come or don’t come bet, the next throw of the dice becomes the first throw for that bet.
The rules concerning whether the bet wins or loses are the same as those for the pass line bets. For example, if a come bet was placed on the third throw and the score is 6, the come bet will win if another score of 6 is thrown before a 7. When a come or don’t come bet is placed, the dealer moves the bet to the box of the score required. After a point is established, come bets cannot be reduced or removed. Don’t come bets may be removed or reduced after a point is established.
Odds
These are additional bets that can be made once a point has been established but the player must already have a bet on pass or don’t pass, come or don’t come. Odds bets are good value because they are paid out at true mathematical odds and no commission is charged. However casinos limit the amount that can be bet, varying from allowing a bet of up to the same amount as the original bet; to double the original bet; to a bet up to two and a half times the original stake.
The higher the stake a player can make on the odds bets, the lower the house advantage. Odds bets can be reduced or removed at any time.
On the come out roll, odds bets on the come line are off, but may be called on by the player. Odds bets on the don’t come line are on at the come out roll. There is no specific area on the layout for these bets. The player makes the bet by placing additional chips behind his or her original pass or don’t pass bet.
Place
These are one of the most popular bets played in craps games and are bets on the individual scores of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. Place bets win if the score elected is thrown before a 7 is rolled. They can be made at any time. Players simply call out the bet they want and pass the necessary chips to the dealer, who places the bet.
Place bets are off at the come out roll unless the player calls them on. The bets can be increased, decreased, removed or called off at any time. No commission is charged but place bets are paid out at less
Than the true mathematical odds which gives the house a varying advantage depending on the number played. Scores of 4 and 10 give the house an advantage of 6.67 per cent; scores of 6 and 8 give 1.52 per cent; while 5 and 9 give four per cent.
