These are played on smaller tables and are dealt at a faster speed than baccara. Minimum stakes are around US$5, which is considerably less than the high stakes normally played for at traditional baccara tables.
Baccarat and punto banco differ from baccara in that the casino acts as the banker, paying out winnings and collecting losing bets. In American casinos, baccarat players take turns to act as the dealer, but in punto banco that role is fulfilled by the casino.
Between four and eight decks of cards are used and the game is still played with community cards (all the players bet on the same hand). The rules on scoring and drawing cards are the same as for baccara.
Players have three choices when betting. They can bet on the banker (the casino), on the player, or on a tie between the two. The odds paid for a tie vary but are normally 8 to 1. It is not worth betting on a tie as the high house advantage makes it poor value.
To begin the game, the dealer shuffles the cards and invites a player to cut them by placing a blank card into the pack. The dealer places the cards in the shoe (sabot) and inserts a blank card about one deck from the end to indicate when the cards will be reshuffled. After each player has made his or her bet, four cards are dealt face down by the dealer. The cards for the player’s hand are placed in the area of the table marked Punto‘ or ‘Player‘. The player looks at the cards and draws additional cards according to the rules.
When the player’s score is determined, the banker’s hand is dealt with according to the rules. In the case of a tie, neither the bets on the player (punto) nor the banker (banco) lose, and bets on the tie are paid out. Winning bets on the player are paid at evens. Winning bets on the banker are also paid at evens, less five per cent commission, which works out at odds of 19 to 20.
Baccarat is the big money game in US casinos. Millions of dollars can be won or lost in a few minutes and a casino’s profit or loss statement can be directly affected by one player’s foray at the baccarat tables.
