Many casinos form part of hotel and leisure complexes located in tourist destinations, such as Sun City in South Africa and Atlantis in the Bahamas. However there is nowhere else that embraces the gambling culture quite like Las Vegas. Over the years, it has grown from a desert oasis into an international resort and holiday destination, offering round-the-clock gaming and top-quality entertainment in outstanding, if sometimes unusual, surroundings. Tourists visit to marvel at the amazing architecture that has become a trademark of the city, bringing elements of Paris, Rome, Venice and Egypt together in one place. By contrast, most European casinos seem small and demure, offering no-frills gaming. City- centre casinos in Europe cater largely for tourists, while provincial casinos attract mostly local clientele.

LAS VEGAS

Gambling was legalized in Nevada on 19 March 1931, but in the early days, Las Vegas was very much under the control of The Mob. However during the 1960s, a number of major corporations began running the casinos, transforming them into legitimate businesses. The 1980s were a time of major growth and investment, with new casinos being built on a grand scale.

Nowadays the casinos of Las Vegas are huge entertainment complexes. The most lavish and expensive are found around The Strip, otherwise known as Las Vegas Boulevard, the street that forms the heart of the city. They compete to offer the most spectacular shows and attractions, which feature such anachronisms as replicas of ancient Egypt and Rome, a medieval castle, the Manhattan skyline and a tropical rainforest. Many of the casinos are family friendly, with children’s entertainment and amusement parks. New casinos continue to be built and renovated, with recent trends moving toward elegant European themes.

Much of early Las Vegas has disappeared, to be replaced by more recent developments. However the Flamingo, the original casino that inspired the transformation of Las Vegas from a desert oasis into a gambling centre, still exists. The area around Fremont Street, formerly known as Glitter Gulch, has been pedestrianized and covered with a canopy of over two million lights, creating a light and sound show called Sky Parade. The casinos here are less expensive than those on The Strip.

Las Vegas is one of the world’s top entertainment centres. From the early days it has played host to stars including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Liza Minnelli and more recently, Siegfried and Roy’s Magic Show. The city is also a popular wedding venue.
