Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in the world due mainly to the large odds that it pays. A winning number on roulette pays 35 to 1, which means that a small stake can potentially turn into a fortune if a player has a winning streak. By reinvesting winnings, a player with a $1 initial stake could accumulate $46,000 in just three spins of the wheel.
Looking for a system to beat the wheel is a popular pastime for many players. Inspired by the success of previous winners, they spend hours carefully noting all the numbers spun on the roulette wheel. They then devote a lot of time analyzing the results, looking for patterns that show that particular numbers are spun with a greater frequency than others.
Casino operators do not mind players doing this, and even supply paper and pens specifically for this purpose. The operators feel secure in the knowledge that the roulette wheels are balanced regularly, so it is unlikely that a player will come up with a winning system. If a player does start winning a lot of money, casino management can easily switch the roulette wheels. If this tactic doesn’t work they have one more ace up their sleeves; they simply bar the player.
The Man who ‘Broke the bank‘
The most famous roulette player of all time is the man who ‘broke the bank‘ at Monte Carlo, Charles Deville Wells, an Englishman who arrived at the casino in Monaco on 19 July 1891.
With a stake of FF100,000 he played roulette for eleven hours, winning FF250,000. He had similar good fortune on his second day at the casino. On the third day he lost FF50,000 on roulette but recovered his loss by playing a card game called trente et quarante, before he returned to roulette and succeeded in breaking the bank a dozen times, winning half a million francs.
Breaking the bank in a casino does not mean that the casino is bankrupt. It simply means that the table has to replenish its float of cash chips before play can continue. At that time, as a publicity stunt in Monte Carlo, the table would be draped in a black cloth if the bank was broken. This ceremony was specially designed to attract enormous attention on the gaming floor. The black cloth would remain on the table whilst the float was replenished. Players would see this and be encouraged to bet more in the hope that they, too, could break the bank.
Nowadays it is not at all unusual for the bank to be broken on a table and it can happen several times in one night. The float is simply replenished with chips at the utmost speed so that gaming is not interrupted.
Charles Deville Wells returned to Monte Carlo in November 1891 and continued to win. But in 1892 his luck ran out, and he began to lose heavily. He was eventually arrested in Normandy for trying to sell coal he had stolen from a steam yacht, and extradited to England. He was convicted of fraud for swindling investors in his spurious mechanical inventions and sentenced to eight years in prison. Wells’ good luck on the tables was highly publicized and started a gaming boom in Monte Carlo. In 1892 a music hall song written about him became a hit in the UK and USA.
